Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon during colonial rule. Sri Lanka is an island south of India, located in the Indian Ocean.
We visited Sri Lanka during the beginning of 2019 for a month. We planned to stay a month, but fell in love with this humble island and ended up staying for three months. Having visited India beforehand, we could see so many similarities between the both however, Sri Lanka seemed to encompass all the positive parts of India onto one small tropical island.
Whether you are after adventure or relaxation, Sri Lanka really is the perfect destination. From Safari in Yala and Udwalawe National Park to trekking in the mountainous region of Ella; there are enough activities for the adventure seeker. And you cannot miss the Ella to Kandy train journey for breathtaking views. You can then head to the south or east coast for an abundance of tropical sandy beaches. Enjoy a coconut or Lion beer as you watch the sunset from a palm tree swing.
Most importantly, we fell in love with the people of Sri Lanka. Having lived there for three months, allowed us to stay in accommodation within local communities. This really gave us a feel of local life and allowed us to meet some incredibly kind people during our stay. Our hosts would always welcome us into their home and share their culture and traditions. To Sri Lankans, family is one of the most important things you can hold in life; and we would always make to feel like part of their loving family.
We wrote a full blog with all the reasons we loved Sri Lanka as there really is so much about this magical little island. We also have shared many videos on our YouTube Channel from our time in Ceylon. We would love to hear the reasons you love this wonderful place too.
